"Breaking the Silence"

Men's Retreat

John Haley

2008

Friday, September 5th

7:00 pm

to Sunday, September 7th

1:00 pm

There are 2 areas about which men have difficulty sharing: spirituality and sexuality. Yet these two parts of us and the experiences related to them are incredibly important in fully realizing our identity. A further curious fact is that we would rarely put these two, sexuality and spirituality, in the same sentence. Each of them is important in our life journey as human beings and as men. The perhaps surprising thing is that they belong together. The dualism that has held sway in so many lives has assumed that sexuality is somehow a part of our dark side, while we would place spirituality in the camp of the angels. The good news is that this is very far from the truth: the bad news is that there is so often little appreciation of this truth.

The Men's Retreat, September 5 to 7th, will offer an opportunity to explore the themes of sexuality and spirituality together. As we pray, reflect and share, hopefully we will grow in the realization that all that God has created is good, that our bodies as well as our spirits are from God, and that our deepest yearnings and desires are the very realities that will lead us deeply into communion with our God and with one another. Sexuality and spirituality are powerful realities in our lives, and while respecting them, we shouldn't fear them. In coming to embrace them we just might discover that they not only deserve to be in the same sentence; they are, of necessity, collaborating gifts of God in our lives.

John Haley worked for many years at the Guelph Centre of Spirituality (Loyola House) in Guelph, Ontario. As well as leading and directing retreats John has extensive experience in individual counseling and spiritual direction. John has also worked as a spiritual director at the Southdown Institute in Aurora, Ontario. In Nanaimo John is a part time chaplain at Edgewood.

Come for creative reflections on the theme, contemplative time in nature, and connecting deeply with others. Reflections will draw from the inspiration of cosmos and earth, from well-known mystics and visionaries.

"Out of the Darkness"

Men's Retreat

John Haley

2008

Friday, December 5th

7:00 pm

to Sunday, December 7th

1:00 pm

Whether it be the natural rhythms of the year or the Advent season of the Christian calendar, early December stirs a sense of the tensions between darkness and light. Many times our emphasis leans toward the light: concern that the light is waning, hope that the pattern will be reversed and light will increase; an affirmation that we are children of the light. The darkness is often ignored or treated as something that is negative. Many folks note an experience known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) in which they find physical energy and emotional mood declining as darkness grows more pervasive.

As a result of this positive emphasis of the light and a corresponding negative stance toward the darkness we may never notice the rich significance of the darkness. In the darkness power and control can be softened by vulnerability; an overwhelming sense of independence is tempered by the experience of powerlessness; arrogance is forced to dance with compassion.

In the Advent retreat of 2008 we will explore the learning's, both intellectual and affective, that are there for us in the darkness. A friend put her finger on this truth very succinctly when she observed: the darkness will either leave you bitter or better.

Please join us for this important exploration as we begin the season of Advent.
